How to Avoid Topping a Golf Ball
One of the main causes of topping when using an iron is approaching the shot with the idea that you need to push the ball into the air with the club head. What you really want to do is trust the loft of your iron and hit down on the ball. When you see a professional golfer hit a shot with an iron, you’ll always see that they leave a divot, and this is something that you want to do as well.
It is important to feel the grass, and hit the ground when
taking a shot with an iron. You always want to leave the divot in front of the
golf ball. Try focusing on moving an object such as a leaf, or blade of grass
that is where you want your divot to be. This way you’ll be hitting through the
ball coming down on it, and you’ll have less of a chance of topping it. Always hitting
the ball on the decent of your swing will help to eliminate your tendency to top
the ball over time.

An additional cause of topping is related to the movement of your head during your swing. When you move or turn your head, the rest of your body will adjust with it, often times raising your shoulders several inches. This will result in your club also rising higher and the bottom of your club head will be making contact with the ball. You want to make sure to keep your head down, and your body still throughout your swing.
If you follow these few simple guidelines, you’ll definitely see improvement overtime with some practice.
