Hybrid Golf Iron History

Although Hybrid Irons are latest trend in golf today, their design is actually based on several concepts that have been present in clubs for quite some time. Originally, this type of iron was referred to as a “rescue” or “baffler” because, like hybrid clubs, they were used to get you out of difficult playing situations. The original rescue clubs were basically just woods with a smaller head that were designed to cut through the rough and other hazards more easily. Hybrid irons are becoming so popular because long irons are very hard to be proficient with, and a hybrid iron can provide a golfer with a club that provides great accuracy and with increased distance.
Taylor Made was one of the first golf club manufacturers to design and produce modern day hybrid irons and clubs. They were initially the idea of former PGA Pro, Gary McCord, who conceptualized a club that combined the benefits of both a fairway wood and long iron. Following the success of Taylor Made’s new “rescue clubs”, many other companies began developing their own hybrid clubs, taking the initial design concept to whole new levels.
So, why where these hybrid iron and clubs such a great success when they first came out? Well, the main reason is that they provided golfers with a club that was easy to hit, and it also helped to improve their game. The design of these clubs allowed for the center of gravity to be moved much lower and farther back than standard irons, which caused the ball to be launched at a higher angle, much more easily. This high launch angle also caused the ball the “bite” onto the green when it landed because of additional backspin caused by the club head. This meant that the new hybrid clubs not only got your ball to the green more easily and more accurately, but it also provided more control when the ball touched down.
Another great characteristic of hybrid irons is the amount of confidence they can offer a golfer. They make shots that might have seemed impossible before very make-able. These irons create this increased level of playing confidence because they actually give a golfer the feeling that he/she is using a fairway wood.
The design of hybrid golf irons has continued to advance
since their original conception, and they are becoming the best friends of both
pros and novices alike.
